Six weeks of sport

Six weeks of sport

By Josh Dyke

Hello and welcome back to the third edition of ‘Six weeks of Sport’ where I, Josh Dyke, keep you up to date on some of the major sports events that have happened this term.

First up, we have the Men’s Rugby World Cup, this year held all over France. The World Cup is held once every 4 years and spans a whole 7 weeks due to the physicality of the sport; this gives the players time to recover from the injuries they gain in the battle that is Rugby. As I am writing this, everyone is in the group stages. This is where four groups of five country’s teams compete to be the top two of the group and progress in the tournament. England are ranked 8th in the tournament and so far, have faced: Samoa, Chile, Japan and Argentina, who were in fact ranked higher than us, but we have won all our games in the pool, and are now qualifying first. Only Fiji stands between us and progressing to the semifinals.

Second on the list is the US open tennis tournament, one of the four grand slams you may have heard me talk about in earlier newspapers, which began at the very start of this term. History was made in the men’s side of the draw, where Novak Djokovic of Serbia became the first man - and second person - to ever win 24 Grand Slams. An achievement that he has worked all his life for and now finally reached. This was first achieved by Margaret Court of Australia 50 years to the day at the American open; a truly extraordinary achievement.

In the women’s side of the draw, it was a home win for Coco Gauff, where the American tennis player beat Aryana Sabelenka of Belarus with an incredible comeback from going one set down (6-2), to winning the next two 6-3, 6-2. An incredible feat considering Gauff is only 19!

Finally, we have the Ryder and Solheim cup, where the golf teams of the U.S.A and Europe go head-to-head, to see who comes out victorious. This year, it was Europe in both the Men’s and Women’s, who beat U.S.A in just 1 day! Amazing considering that the tournament usually takes 3! There was even a hole in one in the women’s event!
